A/not A The Playlist
Music which accompanies the Book, “A/not A: A Writer’s Philosophy to End Division (3rd Edition)”
OK, being an editor has its perks. One of the best is: I discovered that you can listen to music while you are editing. (NOT while you are writing. For that, complete silence is recommended.) Music actually makes what otherwise would be an arduous event a somewhat tolerable process.
“A/not A: A Writer’s Philosophy to End Division (3rd Edition)” will be published next month. It required extensive editing, including the production of a new manual index. All this took three months of work. To make this a bit more tolerable, I curated a playlist of songs which I could listen to while I worked. It took roughly four weeks to put the playlist together. I listened to the playlist (either in complete form, or in partial snippets) while I was editing the book.
It has 102 songs on it in a wide variety of genres and styles. The music is “Indie Electronic and Dream Folk,” but it also has a smattering of Progressive Rock, Neo-Psychedelic, and Art Rock. Each songs has either a musical mood or lyrics (or both) which directly pertain to A/not A. This is not some random playlist, like “My Killer Songs,” but a carefully curated and styled flow of music where every piece has meaning.
It became a deeply personal playlist since part of the book was autobiographical.
Why is it 102 songs? Why SEVEN HOURS of music? For one, I found a lot of good music I wanted to include. But also, seven hours is an editing session: It took me that long (roughly) to edit one chapter of the book. I realize it is VERY long, but it is not intended to be listened to all in one sitting. It is better enjoyed the way Disneyworld is: a brief stay where a few choice sights and experiences can be taken in, then going back to normal life for awhile to recover.
